It is situated near the river, at an elevation making it possible to view the entire city. It’s a good place to begin exploring the Historical-Artistic Site of Ciudad Rodrigo, by walking along its walls towards the Plaza Mayor, stopping at the Town Hall and Cathedral. On the way back, roam its streets with churches, palaces and stately homes, to eventually watch the sun set over the Águeda River in the evocative gardens of the Parador. Make a fitting end to the evening in the restaurant, by tasting the typical dishes of the charra cuisine, based on tasty sausages, succulent roasts, and the best Iberian ham.
Its location makes the Region of Ciudad Rodrigo a good place from which to visit the city of Salamanca, the natural landscapes of Las Hurdes, the mountain ranges of o you can visit the city of Salamanca, the natural landscapes of Las Hurdes, the Arribes, the Sierra de Gata and Sierra de Francia mountain ranges, and to cross the Portuguese border to destinations such as the walled city of Almeida.
From Ciudad Rodrigo you can head to other towns included in the Network such as Cancelario, Mogarraz, Miranda del Castañar or Ledesma, and La Alberca, in the Sierra de Francia. The Arribes del Duero Nature Park is also close by, with a multitude of sporting and leisure activities.
A little further away is the provincial capital, Salamanca (80 km), a World Heritage City. We recommend a visit to its Plaza Mayor, stopping to look at the façades of the Casa de las Conchas and the University, to find the image of the frog; and climbing the medieval towers of its cathedral for gorgeous views of the city.
The Portuguese border is just 25 kilometres away, a short distance that lets you discover, if you’re up for it, the fortified town of Almeida, where you can walk around most of its walled perimeter.

The stone arcades of the dining hall of this impregnable castle take you back to the Middle Ages while you contemplate the amazing landscapes of the Charro countryside. At the table, along with the best ham from Guijuelo, some of the most popular dishes are the free-range eggs covered with Iberian ham and potatoes, the farinato with low-temperature cooked egg yolk and potatoes, baked lamb leg or grilled sirloin of Moorish beef.
